Indonesia Proposes Sovereign AI Fund to Bolster Regional Tech Ambitions
Indonesia has unveiled plans for a sovereign AI development fund, positioning itself as a future hub for technological innovation in Southeast Asia. The 179-page strategy document outlines a decade-long roadmap through 2030, with Danantara Indonesia—the nation's $900 billion sovereign wealth fund—slated to oversee the initiative.
While the proposal lacks specific funding targets, it signals a 2027-2029 launch window for the public-private venture. Fiscal incentives for domestic AI investors remain undefined, but the framework demonstrates Jakarta's urgency to compete with neighboring Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam in attracting data center and semiconductor investments.
"Indonesia right now is in the early stages of AI adoption," notes the strategy paper, developed with input from Huawei and local conglomerate GoTo. The MOVE comes as ASEAN nations race to capitalize on the global AI infrastructure boom, with Malaysia already securing billions in cloud computing investments.
